Lawyers cannot engage in certain types of misconduct, including the misuse of clients' money. This type of misconduct violates state and federal laws. For example, lawyer misconduct is considered if a lawyer receives personal funds from a client, mixes the funds with those of the lawyer, or controls client funds without permission. The idea that a lawyer can lie on behalf of their clients is, in my experience, the most common misconception about my previous profession.
In reality, an attorney is strictly prohibited from misrepresenting the truth, about his client or about any other matter, before any court or court and in communications with any party involved. The four responsibilities of an attorney are to communicate with the client, to provide competent legal representation, to practice law ethically, and to be honest about fees. Unfortunately, most of the complaints that people have with attorneys fall into one of these four categories, and having more than one problem isn't that uncommon.
